Nanlite Alien 300C & 150C LED Panels: Raising the Bar for Brightness & Speed
Posted by Sam Mallery on Aug 13th 2024
We have an important message to communicate to all mankind: The aliens are here. However, they're not lifeforms from a distant star capable of intergalactic travel, they're a new line of LED panel lights that represent the state of the art in advanced lighting technology. We're excited to introduce you to the new Nanlite Alien 300C and Alien 150C, two full-color RGBWW LED panel lights that will likely make you reconsider what's possible with compact and lightweight LED light panels.
What's Different About the Nanlite Alien 300C and 150C?
The Nanlite PavoSlim LED Panels are excellent when you need a light source that's as thin and lightweight as possible, while also being durable, fast and easy to set up, and bright. However, when brightness is more of a primary concern, you will need a more powerful light. This is where the Aliens step into view.
While the new Alien 300C and 150C share some characteristics with the PavoSlim panels, they are completely different beasts. Both types of panels are thin and lightweight when you consider how much light they output for their size, but the Aliens are in a completely different league in regards to output. Both types of panels can be set up and packed away incredibly quickly, which is due in part to the innovative "pop-up" softboxes that are included with most PavoSlims and both of the Alien models. Both panels have modular designs with Control Units, keeping the light head separate. The similarities mostly end there.
Output at 5600K, 1 meter:
Alien 300C: 28630 Lux (2659.8 fc)
Alien 150C: 13050 Lux (1212 fc)
As the model names imply, the Alien 300C has a rated power of 300W, and the Alien 150C is 150W. The 300C is nearly double the size and provides much more output, but both fixtures are incredibly bright for their size. If you compare them to other LED panels with similar output power, you'll find that the Alien 300C is up to 45% more lightweight and the 150C is up to 13% lighter than the competition.
This means that in addition to having less heavy and bulky lights to transport around, you can travel with more lightweight stands to mount them, and they're light enough to be used on counterweighted boom arms as well. When you use these lights, you will immediately recognize how they were intentionally designed to make your life on set easier in several ways.
The First Nanlite Fixtures with IP55 Ratings
The Alien panels feature IP55 water resistance, so they can be used in the rain. This is a must for journalists, and comes in pretty handy when you're shooting an exterior scene of a film and the drops start coming down. In addition to the included pop-up softbox, which can stay attached to the light when it's put away in the included padded carrying case, transparent rain covers are included for the Control Units.
Enough space is provided inside the rain cover for V-Mount batteries, which means the Aliens can run continuously when plugged into AC with the included cable, or they can run in the field on battery power. Both models are compatible with 14.4V–26V batteries. The 150C has a single V-Mount battery plate, and the 300C has two. With a 26V 270Wh battery, the 150C runs 1 hour and 10 minutes at 100% power, two 26V 270Wh batteries, the 300C runs for 1 hour and 20 minutes at 100% power. They can be powered with external 48V sources as well.
You get all the bread-and-butter color temperatures with the wide CCT range of 2700K–12000K, and Green to Magenta adjustment of ±150. These are RGBWW panels, which means you get thousands of colors, 151 gel presets, HSI Mode, XY Coordinates, RGBW Mode with control with colors in 4 separate channels, and 15 customizable effects that can be saved as presets in the NANLINK app. The colorfulness extends to the display of the Control Units, where an upgraded user interface makes thoughtful use of icons and graphics to speed up the production process.
The Alien panels also offer a wide range of control options. For wireless, both models have built-in LumenRadio CRMX, Bluetooth, and 2.4G. DMX/RDM ports are provided, and the onboard buttons, knobs, and screen let you control them directly.
You can quickly angle the beam and lock it into place with the single-sided lock and durable metal yoke. The build quality throughout is rugged and ready for daily professional work, and the included case provides protection without weighing you down. Again, the pop-up softboxes are included along with two layers of removable diffusion and egg-crate grids that can quickly be attached and detached. Metal barn doors are available separately, with the BD-AL150 version for the Alien 150C and the BD-AL300 version for the Alien 300C. A durable quick-release clamp to mount the Control Unit on stands is included as well.
Not only do the Aliens get unusually bright, they allow you to dim in fine 0.1% increments. You can also change the settings to dim in 1% increments, or they can be set to dim in 0.1% increments only in the last 10%, so you only need to fine tune the lower settings. The fan in the panel is quiet and will not interfere with audio on set, but it too can be set to different modes to give you better control.
These new panels provide lots of versatility in color and control, and they also adapt well to all kinds of shooting situations. They are powerful enough to be put to good use on large sets, yet slender enough to operate perfectly when space is tight. Whether you're in a big sound stage or a cramped hallway, the Aliens with help you get the job done.
We hope you like these new lights, and we encourage you to try them out in person. Contact your nearest Nanlite dealer and inquire about getting a demonstration. Witnessing how powerful these lights are in person is an experience you won't forget.
