PavoSlim 240CL RGBWW LED Panel: A Big, Lightweight, Strip Softbox-Style Light
Posted by Sam Mallery on Sep 10th 2024
PavoSlim panel lights already come in many sizes and styles, and today we're adding more variety to the lineup. The new Nanlite PavoSlim 240CL is a 4x1 RGBWW LED panel light, which means it's a full 4-feet long, but, because it's a PavoSlim, it's only 0.92” (2.35cm) thick, and the panel weighs less than 8 pounds (3.6kg). It's a large and versatile light that's easy to move around and can be set up and packed away incredibly quickly.
In a way, the new PavoSlim 240CL is quite similar to the existing PavoSlim 120C when you attach two of them together in the 4x1 configuration with the separately available PavoSlim 120 Dual-Panel Coupler and Softbox Kit. However, the most important difference is speed. With the PavoSlim 120's and the coupler kit, you need to commit time to the assembly of the brace and softbox. The new PavoSlim 240CL comes out of its included padded case ready to go, and can be up and running with the "pop-up" softbox in no time.
The 4x1 size of PavoSlim 240CL isn't too common, however, similarly sized "strip" softboxes are used by many. Modifiers like the Nanlite 12x55in Stripbank Softbox are often deployed in filmmaking, video production, and photography. They open up creative options, like side-lighting people and objects. Similar to what you would do with a rim light or hair light, except you can have most or all of your on-camera subject's body edge-lit. Working with a 4x1 light like this, you can expect captivating new looks and inspirations.
The included egg-crate grid that comes with PavoSlim 240CL can be installed quickly and taken off just as fast, and it lets you direct the light onto your subject without spilling on nearby surfaces and objects. A baby-pin mount is also included, which lets you easily rig the 240CL to a grip head on a c-stand arm. The included swivel mount lets you attach to a standard light stand, and this mount features an integrated handle to make your life on set a little easier.
The corners of PavoSlim 240CL all have 1/4"-20 mounting points that are compatible with the separately available Magnetic Mounting Adapters accessory, which lets you quickly attach it to metal surfaces without the need for a light stand.
One of the advantages of the PavoSlim 240CL being a single 4x1 panel is that it can utilize Nanlite's exclusive "pop-up" softbox. This modifier was designed to stay attached to the light, even when it's inside of the case. This way you only need to take the light out of the case, release two tabs, and then the softbox literally just pops out. Collapsing the softbox is just as quick and easy. If you do not want to use the "pop-up" softbox, it can be swiftly removed with hook-and-loop fasteners, and easily attached again when needed.
The following PavoSlim panels also come with a pop-up softbox:

When you need an even larger source, a separate accessory is available that lets you attach 2 PavoSlim 240CL's together in a 4x2 configuration, or attach 4 of them together as a 4x4. The PavoSlim 240CL Coupler Kit comes with two coupling braces that have integrated handles for the different configurations, a softbox, diffusion, and egg-crate grids.
Like the other members of its family, PavoSlim 240CL features durable metal construction and a silent, fan-less design. It can be controlled through LumenRadio CRMX, Bluetooth, 2.4G, DMX/RDM, and its intuitive built-in controls. It outputs 21030 lux, 1954 fc @1M 5600K, and provides a bi-color CCT range of 2700K–7500K with G/M adjustment of +/- 150, and 151 gel presets. The quality of the light is accurate with a 3200K SSI of 84, 5600K SSI of 74, CRI average 96, TLCI average 97, TM-30 Rf average 94, and TM-30 Rg average 100. It runs on AC, V-Mount batteries, or external 48V sources so you can shoot on location.
Whether you end up magnetically mounting a 240CL to a fence for a unique exterior shot, hoisting one close against the ceiling in a space-constrained hallway scene, or doing an untold number of things that nobody's even dreamed up yet, we hope this new panel light is an enjoyable addition to your kit.
